BGB Foils Attempts to Push 79 People Into Bangladesh From India in 24 Hours

Border Guard Bangladesh says it blocked multiple attempts by India's BSF to push 79 people across the border in 24 hours, with incidents reported across five districts including Jhenaidah, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, and Netrakona.

DHAKA, June 5, 2026; Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled multiple attempts by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to push 79 people into Bangladesh across five districts within a 24-hour period, officials said on Saturday.

The attempted push-ins took place along border areas in Netrakona, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, and Jhenaidah, according to BGB Headquarters Media Officer Shariful Islam.

In Jhenaidah, BGB members from the Maheshpur Battalion (BGB-58) stopped three individuals from crossing into Bangladesh through the Jadabpur border. Patrol units took positions along the zero line, blocking their entry and forcing them to return to Indian territory.

In Naogaon, personnel of the BGB-16 Battalion prevented 17 people from entering the country through the Karamdanga border.

In Lalmonirhat, the Teesta Battalion (BGB-61) blocked 21 people from crossing into Bangladesh along the Barkhata and Poyshottibari border areas in Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas. In separate incidents in the same district, the Lalmonirhat Battalion (15 BGB) stopped an attempt to push seven individuals through the Dighaltari border and blocked another attempt involving four people at the Durgapur border. The BGB said those individuals are currently staying in a char, or riverine sandbar area, on the Indian side outside the barbed-wire fence, while security forces continue to monitor the situation closely.

In Panchagarh, Indian authorities reportedly brought 10 individuals to an area outside the Barobari Pradhanpara border fence, under the jurisdiction of the Nilphamari Battalion (56 BGB). A flag meeting was subsequently held at the company commander level between BGB and BSF. During the meeting, BSF claimed the individuals were Bangladeshi nationals but failed to provide supporting documentation, according to the BGB statement. The matter remains under observation.

In Netrakona, 16 to 17 individuals who had earlier gathered at a government primary school in Assam's Mahadev Police Station area, opposite the Kochugora border under the Netrakona Battalion (31 BGB), were relocated to an area adjacent to the BSF's Chikni camp near the Lengura border following BGB's firm stance. The force said it is maintaining heightened vigilance in the area.

Reiterating its position, the BGB said any attempt to push people across the border in violation of international border management norms, existing laws, and bilateral understandings between Bangladesh and India is unacceptable.

"No individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally through the border," the force said, adding that it remains fully committed to protecting the country's sovereignty and border security and is prepared to deal with any situation.
