NAIKHONGCHHARI, Bangladesh: A Rohingya man died Monday morning after stepping on a landmine near the Myanmar border in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari upazila, officials said.
The explosion occurred at around 9:00 am in the Rezu Amtali border area, roughly 2.5 kilometres inside Bangladeshi territory from Border Pillar 40 and the international zero line, according to Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh's 34 Battalion in Cox's Bazar.
The victim was identified as Abdul Khalek, 30, son of Md Anu Mia, a resident of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Officials said Khalek was on his way to clear an acacia plantation owned by Master Shah Alam in the Ghumdhum union area when the blast critically injured him. His younger brother, who was with him at the time, rushed him to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mozammel Haque said authorities are making arrangements to recover the body and send it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
