COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh, May 6 — A high-level delegation from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, paid an official visit to Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya on Tuesday to assess humanitarian services and engage directly with displaced communities.
During the visit, the delegation toured World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution outlets, schools for Rohingya children, a hospital operated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and a production facility in Kutupalong operated by Rohingya women.
The State Minister also held an interactive session with elected Rohingya representatives, including youth and women leaders, where she listened to their concerns regarding camp life, access to services, and future prospects. She assured the community of Bangladesh’s continued support to improve living conditions in the camps while reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine State.
Later in the day, the State Minister attended a stakeholder consultation at the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar. Government officials, representatives from security agencies, the United Nations, NGOs, and INGOs joined the consultation to discuss coordinated efforts in responding to the Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
Addressing the meeting, she thanked humanitarian partners and government officials for their continued support and emphasized the need for coherent action in line with Bangladesh’s policy of ensuring the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their ancestral homeland.
Speaking briefly to local media afterward, the State Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s renewed diplomatic efforts to raise the Rohingya crisis in regional and multilateral forums and reiterated the government’s commitment to keeping international attention focused on the prolonged humanitarian situation.
