DHAKA, Bangladesh, May 11; A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar early Monday, causing tremors to be felt across several parts of Bangladesh, including Chattogram, according to international seismic monitoring agencies.
The quake occurred at approximately 1:36 a.m. Bangladesh time and originated near Sidoktaya in central Myanmar at a depth of around 10 kilometres, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
The preliminary epicentre was located at 20.46 degrees north latitude and 93.94 degrees east longitude, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed seismic activity in the same region.
Residents in parts of Chattogram reported waking up to brief but noticeable shaking, with some people leaving their homes in panic. Tremors were also reportedly felt in several surrounding areas, though no immediate casualties or major structural damage were reported.
The earthquake came less than a day after another mild tremor was felt in northern districts of Bangladesh, including Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Dinajpur, and Mymensingh. Seismic monitoring agencies recorded that earlier quake at around magnitude 4.4 to 4.5, with its epicentre near the India-Bangladesh border region.
Myanmar and the surrounding region remain seismically active due to their location along major tectonic fault lines. Authorities in Bangladesh and neighbouring countries continue to monitor the situation, although no tsunami warning or significant threat has been issued.
